Gas Price-Fixing Case Heats Up in Canada

CSPnet -- Second class-action suit authorized in Quebec; stations could pay up to $100 million.

MONTREAL, Quebec -- Justice Dominique Belanger of the Quebec Superior Court authorized on September 6 a gasoline price-fixing class-action lawsuit in 23 additional markets in the Province of Quebec.

Quebec's highest court has authorized the lawsuit against Ultramar, Orco, Irving, Alimentation Couche-Tard, Petroles Cardin, Petroles Global and Philippe Gosselin and associates, reported CBC.

Gas stations in Quebec could pay up to $100 million if a court rules in the plaintiffs' favor, said George Iny, head of the Automobile Protection Association (APA), which filed the lawsuit.

It's pretty easy to notice and keep track of, since the gas stations are in two (2) clusters on the eastern and western edges of downtown Montréal, and each has a radius of about two (2) kilometres (about 1.25 miles). Using the GasBuddy mobile app, I'm able to keep track of gasoline prices as I move about the city, and this custom, or scheme, whichever it is, does seem to be popular all over.

Right now on the Halifax, NS, site all 30 of the high 15 plus the low 15 are at exactly $1.385/liter. That’s never going to happen by accident, only by collusion.

Gas going up $0.29 in a day is crazy. Also I saw gas prices shoot up almost $0.80 in 1 month wth!! Then it takes months for it to go down $0.20.

Unis Rookie Author Toronto Posts:54 Points:28,305 Joined:Aug 2006	Message Posted: Sep 11, 2012 9:32:02 PM Ignore Unis Report Abuse I'd love to see ALL of the gas stations in Ontario under surveillance for this type of thing - it is just ridiculous to see, over the space of a month, prices going up more than 10 cents per litre (that translates to about 40 cents per gallon, in US measure). With every holiday weekend, prices climbed at least two cents per litre or more, and never went back for more than a penny/litre for much longer than a week. My car stays parked most of the time because I need to conserve gas just to go shopping for necessities, and I try to schedule that in off-peak-traffic times. If the powers-that-be want to kick-start the economy, one way would be to bring down the cost of gas (by reigning in the gougers and speculators), because if people can't get out to shop and spend their money on something other than gas, then it's a down-hill spiral from there.
