Some S. Floridians accuse gas stations of price gouging

SunSentinel -- As Tropical Storm Isaac left South Florida, state investigators began looking into complaints of motorists being gouged at the gas pumps. But consumers, already weary of recent price hikes, can expect to continue to pay more at the pump.

The storm shut down oil rigs in the Gulf, further pushing gas prices up that had been rising steadily since last month.

Prices at the pump were up Monday in South Florida. In Broward County, prices for regular gas averaged $3.87 a gallon, up 12 cents from week ago while Palm Beach County's was up 9 cents.

But as Issac loomed consumers who scrambled to fill their gas tanks complained of escalating prices going beyond the $4 flash point.

As long as we have a choice to either "buy" or to "not buy", price gouging cannot last long.

This effect is normal, especially after all experiences they have had before (Hurricane Katrina for example).

Sad for folks, but perhaps they won't need to drive much & their recent fill ups will last longer & force prices back down!

Fuel prices always go up around Labor Day and the hurricane makes it convenient to do so also.

Better to have lower gas prices and stations run out?

Price Gouging? This is something New? It's SOP!
It happens whenever the local supply is threatened with a huge demand. The less in inventory, the higher the demand, the higher the price! It's That Simple!
It will happen again and again and again.... Rain Storms, Flooding, Drought, Tropical Storms, Hurricanes, Tornadoes, Ice Storms, Snow Storms, Thunderstorms, Electrical Grid Failure, etc, etc, etc.
Be prepared: have extra food and a way to cook your food, water and extra fuel. Don't be exposed to high prices when there is very little supply after a severe local event.
Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, Produce and ‘Drive’ vehicles with high MPG, are very reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money.
The price of fuel at the pump is too high!

That's capitalism/competition. But, the complaint shouldn't be the producer/distributors; it should be to regulation of speculative markets. Its the same basic group of factors that led to the "over exuberance" in the markets that led us into the real estate bubble that started the current depression/recession.

Already got hammered because there lack of maintenance on there pipelines he in the west so they think a storm down south in which we don't get any gas from is a good enough reason to raise the price 27 cent so where at 4.29.

I guess the lesson is to fill up early.
Before people start scrambling to fill their gas tanks and drive up the price.
